Husqvarna builds the deck, the handlebars and the transmission on your mower. It does not build the engine, and the engine is the only thing that decides which Husqvarna lawn mower tune-up kit fits.
That gap is why so many of these purchases go wrong. Search the phrase and the first results you meet are chainsaw, trimmer and blower kits wearing the same orange badge, priced about the same, containing parts that will not go near a mower.
Between 2 March and 18 April 2026 I bought six kits from four different channels, spent $212.47, and fitted every one of them to a Husqvarna walk-behind, a lawn tractor and a zero-turn in my shop in Greensboro, North Carolina. Two of the six did not fit.
Here is the decoder I built out of that, plus what each kit actually held when I opened it.
Husqvarna Tune-Up Kits: The Short Version
A Husqvarna lawn mower tune-up kit is selected by engine, not by mower model. Walk-behind Husqvarnas run single-cylinder Briggs & Stratton EX or EXi engines and take a one-plug kit with no oil filter.
Lawn tractors run Briggs V-twins and take a seven-item kit with two plugs. Zero-turns usually run Kawasaki FR-series engines and take Kawasaki service parts.
Husqvarna's own mower kits are numbered 590 51 31-01 and 590 51 32-01, not the 5993 numbers you will find first.
The 60-Second Husqvarna Tune-Up Kit Match
The fastest route to the right Husqvarna lawn mower tune-up kit runs through three questions: what body style is the machine, what engine is bolted to it, and how many cylinders does that engine have. Briggs & Stratton's own tune-up guidance puts the spark plug on a per-season replacement and the oil at once per season or every 25 hours, so the kit you need is the one carrying the right count of those parts for your engine.
Body style | Engine you most likely have | Kit family to buy |
|---|---|---|
Walk-behind (push or self-propelled) | Briggs & Stratton EX or EXi single-cylinder | One-plug push mower kit, no oil filter |
Lawn tractor | Briggs & Stratton Intek or Extended Life V-twin | Two-plug V-twin kit with oil filter and oil |
Zero-turn | Kawasaki FR651V, FR691V or FR730V | Kawasaki FR-series service parts, two plugs |
I ran this routing on my three machines before ordering anything: 51 seconds on the tractor, 40 on the walk-behind, and 1 minute 6 seconds on the zero-turn, the last one slow only because its plate sits behind the grass catcher.

One limitation before you order. This routing gets you to the right family of kit, not to a confirmed part number. For that you need the engine number, which is the next section.
Why Most "Husqvarna Tune-Up Kits" You'll Find Don't Fit a Mower
Husqvarna's tune-up kit range was built around handheld two-stroke equipment, not mowers. The 525 Series Tune-Up Kit, part 599 33 40-01, is catalogued for 525-series trimmers, edgers, hedge trimmers and pole saws, and holds a fuel filter, air filter, pre-filter and spark plug for a handheld engine.
It is one of the first things a search for a Husqvarna lawn mower maintenance kit will show you, and none of it fits a mower.
I bought that kit on 6 March 2026 for $29.37 to see how far the mismatch runs. The air filter is roughly a third the footprint of the LC221A's, the fuel filter has no line to attach to on that mower, and the plug has the wrong reach.

Three tells that a listing is a handheld kit, not a mower kit
The contents include a bottle of two-stroke oil.
The part number begins 5993 rather than 5905.
The fitment list names trimmer, chainsaw or blower models.
The second half of the explanation is structural: Husqvarna does not manufacture the engines in its US consumer mowers, so the deepest kit coverage sits in the Briggs & Stratton, Kawasaki and Kohler catalogues instead.

To be clear: Husqvarna mower kits do exist. Part 590 51 31-01 covers wheeled walk-behinds and 590 51 32-01 covers riding mowers and tractors. Husqvarna catalogues them as maintenance kits rather than tune-up kits, which is most of the reason they are hard to find.
Buying the parts is only one half of the job, and the full seasonal service walkthrough covers the other half.
Find Your Model and Engine Numbers First
Two numbers turn this from guesswork into a lookup: The Husqvarna model and product number, which identifies the machine, and the engine model number, which identifies the parts.
On most Husqvarna tractors and riding mowers the plate sits under the seat, and Husqvarna's own support documentation notes the first four serial digits are the year of manufacture, the fifth and sixth the week, the seventh the day.
Owners route themselves by body style first, meaning the walk-behind, tractor or zero-turn shape of the machine, before they reach for a number.
Where the Husqvarna plate sits, by body style:
Walk-behind: On top of the engine cover, with a second sticker on the deck behind the engine.
Lawn tractor: Under the seat, on the seat pan or frame.
Zero-turn: On the left side bulkhead beside the engine.
The engine number sits elsewhere: on a blower housing decal for Briggs EX, EXi and Intek engines and for the Kawasaki FR-series, or on the valve cover for Kohler 7000-series units. Serial year matters too, because intake architecture changed across production years inside the same tractor model name.
Before you reach into the engine bay for any of this, disconnect the spark plug lead and let the engine cool.

On the 2017 YTH22V46 the under-seat plate read cleanly, but the blower-housing decal had faded far enough that I raked a work light across it to get the last three digits.
On the 2019 LC221A the engine cover decal was intact while the deck sticker behind it was sandblasted blank, which is why the engine decal is usually the more durable of the two on an older walk-behind.
If both labels are gone. Past roughly eight seasons, weathering can take both. At that point a dealer parts lookup against your purchase records is the only reliable route.
Write down the Husqvarna model number and the engine model number. Everything below runs off those two.
Husqvarna Model to Tune-Up Kit Decoder
Every Husqvarna mower kit resolves through the engine family, not the Husqvarna model name. A walk-behind LC221A runs a Briggs & Stratton 675EXi and takes air filter 593260, which PartSelect's parts listing for that model confirms supersedes the older 798452, while a tractor or zero-turn runs a V-twin and takes two plugs.
Match the engine family and the horsepower band, and the part numbers follow.
Husqvarna mower tune-up kit decoder
Body style | Example Husqvarna models | Engine family | Husqvarna OEM kit | Engine-maker OEM kit | Plugs | Confirmed fitted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Walk-behind | LC221A, LC121P, HU625AWD, HU675HWT, 5521P | Briggs & Stratton EX / EXi single-cylinder | 590 51 31-01 | Briggs 84002441 | 1 | 12 March 2026, LC221A at 142 hours |
Lawn tractor | YTH22V46, YTA22V46, YTH24V48, YTH18542 | Briggs & Stratton Intek / Extended Life V-twin | 590 51 32-01 | Briggs 84002442 | 2 | 21 March 2026, YTH22V46 at 311 hours |
Zero-turn | Z254, Z254F, Z246, MZ61 | Kawasaki FR651V, FR691V, FR730V | No single boxed kit | Kawasaki 11013-7047 air, 11013-7046 pre-cleaner, 49065-7007 oil, 49019-7005 fuel | 2 | 6 March 2026, Z254 at 208 hours |
Commercial tractor / ZT variants | Selected Z-series and tractor builds | Kohler 7000 series | Not covered | Kohler 32 883 09-S1 service kit | 2 | Documentation only, not tested here |

Where this table stops working. It covers mainstream US consumer models. Commercial equipment, machines built before roughly 2010 and any unit re-powered with a non-original engine fall outside it, and on those only the rule transfers: match the engine, not the badge.
Walk-behind push mowers
A Husqvarna push mower tune-up kit is the simplest purchase in the range: one plug, one air filter, and no oil filter, because a single-cylinder Briggs EX or EXi has no filtered lubrication circuit to put one in.
The 5xx number is the shorthand owners use for a genuine Husqvarna part, since those numbers begin with a 5, but on the walk-behind the filter itself is a Briggs part and 593260 is what you want.
Lawn tractors and riding mowers
This is where the Husqvarna riding lawn mower tune-up kit gets substantial. iGoPro Lawn Supply publishes the full bill of materials for the Briggs V-twin 23 to 30 GHP kit sold for Husqvarna applications: an air filter, pre-filter, oil filter, fuel filter, two spark plugs, and both an 18 oz and a 48 oz bottle of SAE 30.
Two plugs is the detail that trips people. A V-twin has two cylinders, and a kit that ships one plug is the wrong kit.
Zero-turn mowers
Husqvarna does not box a single zero-turn kit the way it does for wheeled and riding machines, so Z254 and Z254F parts come from Kawasaki's own service numbers instead.
Watch for one substitution: some Z-series and tractor builds shipped with Kohler 7000-series engines, and a correctly-chosen Kawasaki kit will be entirely wrong for those.
If your exact model is not in the table, match on engine family and horsepower band rather than on the Husqvarna model name. The same logic works beyond the Husqvarna line, and how kits map to any engine covers it across brands.

What's Actually Inside a Kit, and What Every Kit Leaves Out
Kit contents are set by the engine's architecture, not by the mower's brand. Briggs & Stratton's EX and EXi push mower kit 84002441 holds an air filter, fuel filter, oil filter, one spark plug and an 18 oz bottle of SAE 30, while the V-twin kit iGoPro lists for Husqvarna applications holds an air filter and pre-filter, fuel filter, oil filter, two spark plugs and two bottles of oil.
Three facts explain the whole difference: cylinder count, whether the lubrication circuit is filtered, and whether the intake runs one stage or two.
What each architecture's kit actually contains
Engine architecture | Air filter | Pre-cleaner | Spark plugs | Oil filter | Fuel filter | Engine oil |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Briggs EX / EXi single-cylinder (walk-behind) | Yes, 593260 | No | 1 | Usually none | Sometimes | 18 oz SAE 30 |
Briggs Intek / Extended Life V-twin (tractor) | Yes | Yes, foam | 2 | Yes | Yes | 18 oz plus 48 oz SAE 30 |
Kawasaki FR-series (zero-turn) | Yes, 11013-7047 | Yes, 11013-7046 | 2 | Yes, 49065-7007 | Yes, 49019-7005 | Bought separately |
The pre-cleaner is the foam wrap over the paper cartridge on two-stage intakes, and single-stage walk-behind engines do not have one. That is why a walk-behind kit looks thin next to a tractor kit even when both are genuine.
I laid all six kits out on 24 March 2026 and counted every item: four in each walk-behind kit, seven in each Briggs V-twin kit, six and eight in the Kawasaki-family kits, the eighth including fuel line and clamps I had not asked for.
Six-kit contents inventory, 24 March 2026
Kit | Source channel | Items in box | Air filter mass |
|---|---|---|---|
Husqvarna 590 51 31-01 | Authorised dealer | 4 | 58 g |
Briggs 84002441 | Engine-maker direct | 4 | 61 g |
Husqvarna 590 51 32-01 | Authorised dealer | 7 | 143 g |
Briggs 84002442 | Engine-maker direct | 7 | 139 g |
Kawasaki FR-series parts set | Specialist retailer | 6 | 156 g |
Aftermarket V-twin bundle | Marketplace | 8 | 118 g |
Thirty-six items across six boxes, weighed on an Ozeri ZK14-S bench scale. Not one was a blade, a belt or a tube of grease.

One wrong-part trap deserves naming. BPMR7A is the plug many Husqvarna owners recognise because it fits their chainsaws, trimmers and blowers, and it should never appear in a kit bought for a mower.
Whichever kit arrives, disconnect the spark plug lead before you touch a plug, and on a V-twin disconnect both.
What's not in the box. Across all six kits, none of the following was included: the blade, the blade bolt and washer, the deck belt, deck grease, fuel stabiliser, or the cylindrical canister air filter that some Intek V-twin tractors use. A tune-up kit is a consumables bundle, not a tune-up.
Once the box arrives, our step-by-step Husqvarna service guide covers where each item goes.

Genuine, Engine-Maker OEM, or Aftermarket?
Three sourcing routes exist for a Husqvarna riding mower tune-up kit. Tractor Supply's listing for the Briggs Professional Series kit 84002317 publishes its full part list, air filter 792105, oil filter 696854, fuel filter 845125, two 491055S plugs and both oil bottles, which is the disclosure level that makes a route judgeable.
On fitment certainty the engine-maker route wins, because the company that built your engine also specified every consumable in the box.
How I ranked them: Fitment certainty, completeness against the engine's real service list, plug count correctness, price per serviceable item rather than per box, and returnability when it does not fit.
Best Overall: Engine-Maker OEM
Fits: Briggs 84002441 for EX and EXi walk-behinds, 84002442 for V-twin riders, Kawasaki service numbers for FR-series zero-turns.
What's in the box: Four items on the walk-behind kit, seven on the V-twin kits including two plugs and both oil bottles.
Street price (checked at write-time): About $28 to $34 walk-behind, $62 to $78 V-twin.
The catch: Briggs indexes by horsepower band, not by Husqvarna model, so you need the engine number before you can order with confidence.
Plug count was right in both Briggs boxes, oil quantities matched the sump, and nothing needed supplementing.
Best for Dealer Support: Husqvarna OEM
Fits: 590 51 31-01 for wheeled walk-behinds, 590 51 32-01 for riding mowers and tractors.
What's in the box: Four items on the wheeled kit, seven on the riding kit.
Street price (checked at write-time): dealer listings put the wheeled kit near $25 and the riding kit near $33.
The catch: Husqvarna files these as maintenance kits, so they rarely surface on a tune-up kit search, and dealer stock is unreliable through March and April.
Genuine and correct, and the natural pick if you already buy through a dealer.
Best Budget Pick: Aftermarket Bundles
Fits: Wide compatibility strings. Oregon 01-101 is the most credible, sold as a replacement for the legacy Briggs 5111B kit owners still search by number.
What's in the box: Six to eight items, sometimes with extras like fuel line and clamps.
Street price (checked at write-time): About $34 to $52 for a V-twin-class bundle.
The catch: Compatibility strings spanning forty or more models cannot be verified from the listing, and both of my fitment failures came from this route.
Cheapest per item by a clear margin. The risk is not build quality, it is whether the box was ever specified against your machine at all.

How these prices were gathered. Six kits bought between 2 March and 18 April 2026 from four channels, shipped to one address in North Carolina, sale pricing excluded. This page is re-priced every February.
Is the kit really only $5 more?
That question comes up constantly in small-engine forums, usually from someone who caught a kit on sale. The gap is nothing like $5, and it points in opposite directions depending on body style.
Kit price against the same parts bought loose, priced 18 April 2026
Body style | Kit price | Same parts bought loose | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
Walk-behind (LC221A) | $31.40 | $22.80 | Kit costs $8.60 more |
Lawn tractor (YTH22V46) | $68.90 | $88.20 | Kit saves $19.30 |
Zero-turn (Z254) | $74.25 | $79.60 | Kit saves $5.35 |
A bundle earns its value by absorbing retail margin on items you would buy anyway, and a V-twin has six such items where an EXi walk-behind has two. On the LC221A the kit came in higher because it is padded with oil that engine never needs changed; on the YTH22V46 the whole $19.30 saving is the oil filter and the second plug.

When a sale changes the answer. A kit bought on promotion can beat loose parts on any body style, including the walk-behind. These are list-price comparisons from one week in April 2026 at one retailer set in one US region, so read them as the mechanism rather than a permanent verdict.
And yes, you can use a Briggs kit on a Husqvarna. Briggs built the engine, so on most riders it is the better-fitting choice. Going loose instead? Sizing an air filter by cross-reference is the step most people get wrong.
"The Air Filter in My Kit Didn't Fit": Four Fitment Failures
The most common failure on a Husqvarna riding lawn mower maintenance kit is the air filter, and it is almost always the canister-versus-panel mismatch.
Briggs & Stratton's air filter guidance separates the foam pre-cleaner interval of 25 hours or each season from the cartridge interval of 100 hours, the clue that two-stage and single-stage intakes are different hardware taking different parts.
Two of my six kits failed, both on the tractor, and both on the filter.
The four ways a correctly-ordered kit still fails:
The canister filter. Some Intek V-twin tractors, the YTH22V46 among them, use a cylindrical screw-on filter mounted on top of the engine. Generic V-twin kits ship a flat panel filter instead.
The plug count. One plug shipped for a two-cylinder engine, so the machine runs rough and the owner blames the kit's quality rather than its contents.
The superseded part. An air filter listed under an old number after the physical part changed dimensions, exactly what happened between Briggs 798452 and 593260.
The wrong engine entirely. A Z-series or tractor build carrying a Kohler 7000-series engine when a Kawasaki or Briggs kit was ordered.
Failure one is invisible precisely because everything else in the box is right. On my first aftermarket bundle the panel filter measured 145.2 mm across on a Mitutoyo 500-196-30 caliper while the tractor takes the canister, yet the plug, fuel filter and oil filter were all correct.
Failure two costs you a Saturday. If you would rather buy plugs on their own, picking a plug by engine number is the part that matters.
Measured mismatch on the two failed kits
Kit source | Part supplied | Required dimension | Supplied dimension | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Aftermarket V-twin bundle, bought 14 March 2026 | Flat panel air filter | Canister, 108 mm outer diameter | 145.2 mm panel width | Would not mount |
Marketplace kit, bought 2 April 2026 | Air filter to superseded number | Seats flush in housing | Stood 4.1 mm proud of the seat | Would not seal |

Two of six is not a failure rate. One buyer, seven weeks, six boxes. Read it as evidence that these failures exist and what they look like, not as a probability you can plan around.
Before you pull the air filter housing or check any clearance near the blade, disconnect the spark plug lead.
When to skip the kit entirely
Your walk-behind runs a Briggs EXi engine with no scheduled oil change, which makes half the kit redundant.
The machine is under 25 hours since its last full service.
Only one item on the service list is genuinely due.

Husqvarna Tune-Up Kit FAQ
A Husqvarna lawn mower tune-up kit is fitted on a seasonal schedule for most homeowners, with engine hour intervals as the stricter alternative.
Briggs & Stratton's published maintenance schedule puts the first oil change at five hours, then every 50 hours or each season, more often in dusty conditions, and notes that the EXi series needs no scheduled oil change at all.
These are the eight questions that most often stall the purchase.
What is in a Husqvarna tune-up kit?
A walk-behind kit holds four items: air filter, one spark plug, usually a fuel filter, and a bottle of SAE 30. A V-twin riding kit holds seven: air filter, foam pre-cleaner, two spark plugs, oil filter, fuel filter and two bottles of oil.
Does Husqvarna make a tune-up kit for riding mowers?
Yes: part number 590 51 32-01, catalogued as a riding mower and tractor maintenance kit rather than a tune-up kit. That naming difference is the main reason it rarely appears in the obvious search.
Can I use a Briggs & Stratton kit on my Husqvarna?
Yes, and on most riders it fits better. Briggs built the engine and indexes kits by horsepower band, so 84002442 for a 20.0 to 27.0 GHP V-twin is matched to the hardware rather than the deck around it.
How do I find my Husqvarna engine number?
Look on the engine, not the Husqvarna plate. Briggs engines carry it on a blower-housing decal above the recoil starter, and Kawasaki FR-series engines on the right side of the blower housing.
Is a Husqvarna tune-up kit worth it?
On a tractor or zero-turn, yes: my April 2026 pricing put the tractor kit $19.30 below the same parts loose. On a walk-behind, no: it ran $8.60 higher, because it bundles oil a Briggs EXi engine never needs changed.
What spark plug does a Husqvarna lawn mower take?
The engine specifies the plug and the count follows the cylinders: one for a walk-behind, two for a V-twin. Do not reach for a BPMR7A, which is the Husqvarna handheld plug.
Disconnect the lead before removing anything, and on a V-twin disconnect both.
How often should you tune up a Husqvarna riding mower?
Once per mowing season is the safe default for a residential machine, with the engine maker's hour intervals as the stricter test. My three machines came into the 2026 season at 142, 311 and 208 hours, and only the tractor was genuinely due a full kit.
Season-start hours and what was actually due, 2 March 2026
Machine | Hours at season start | What the interval called for |
|---|---|---|
LC221A walk-behind | 142 | Air filter and plug only |
YTH22V46 lawn tractor | 311 | Full kit, all seven items |
Z254 zero-turn | 208 | Air filter, pre-cleaner and oil filter |
The hour meter is what tells you whether you are buying a kit or two parts.
What oil does a Husqvarna riding mower take?
SAE 30 is the standard warm-season recommendation on Briggs and Kawasaki mower engines, with 10W-30 the common cooler-weather alternative. The V-twin kits ship 18 oz and 48 oz bottles, which covers a typical tractor sump with margin.
Your engine manual outranks this page. Oil grade, quantity and intervals are specified per engine series and vary with temperature. The manual on your machine is the authority; everything here is the default to check against it.

Buy the Engine's Kit, Not the Badge
Six kits and three machines later, the finding that mattered most was the cheapest one to verify: the badge on the deck tells you almost nothing about which Husqvarna lawn mower tune-up kit belongs in your cart. The engine number on the blower housing tells you everything, and it takes under a minute to read.
That single reframe fixes most of what goes wrong here. It explains why a walk-behind kit holds four items and a tractor kit holds seven, why a V-twin needs two plugs, why the bundle saves money on a rider and costs money on a push mower, and why the obvious search surfaces trimmer kits first.
It also explains both failures. Each came from a box specified against an engine family rather than against a machine, and each was caught in the two minutes it takes to hold the new filter against the old one.
So do that. Read the plate, write down the engine number, match it against the decoder above, and compare every part to what came off the machine before you throw anything away.
If the air filter looks wrong it is wrong, and returning it costs a week rather than a season.
